Hungary is extraordinarily rich in thermal waters and though Europe has a great number of bathing resorts. There is only one thermal pond in the world, in New Zealand, that is so abundant in water and is of such a great extend and disposes of so many valuable qualities for balneotherapy as that of Heviz. It is Europe’s largest warm-water lake, having already been used by ancient Romans.

The surface of the Heviz thermal pond, dating back to a very early geological period, is 47,500 square meters. As the spring delivers an average of 26,000 liters of water per minute, the water of the entire lake exchanges every 72 hours. During the summer months, the temperature of the water is 92 degrees F; even in winter, the temperature never sinks below 80 degrees F.

Another peculiarity of Heviz Spa is the highly curative mud, which covers the bottom of the lake in thickness of about 1 meter. It is a peat mud predominantly of vegetal origin and also contains mineral elements. The International Peloide Committee classifies the mud of Heviz a type of mixed mud. The mud is smooth and pleasing for touch and because of its high thermal capacity, it is especially suitable for mud packings. Biological analyses have proved the presence of oestrogenous substances of hormonal activity in the mud. The curative effects of the water are ensured by the presence of sulfur and radon compounds in significant quantities as well as by the micromassage of mud particles on the skin.

Treatment in Heviz is especially indicated for rheumatical diseases. Sulfur, the essential ingredient of the elementary substance of cartilage and carbon dioxide is the "activator" of the arterial system. Together, these play an important role in the therapy of locomotor disorders. Since the neutral temperature of the lake hardly affects the circulatory system, patients can do exercises in the water which are otherwise not possible.

Treatments in Heviz is indicated for various diseases of muscles and joints. Acute rheumatism, polyarthritis and chronic arthritis in short respond favorably to treatment in Heviz.

About a quarter of all patients who come to Heviz do so with complaints of the spinal column. These kind of complaints generally result from damage to vertebra discs. Hard physical work and continuous sitting in office and in car lead to damage or displacement of the discs. The different articular complaints are consequences of lack of movement which is a manifestation of our civilization. Those suffering from this kind of complaint may gain benefit from "subaquale traction". Its essentials are that from two to five weights of five kilograms each are fastened to a belt around the waist and resting on the hip bone or the feet of the patients. With these the patient floats in the water up to the neck and is suspended by the neck or armpits by an appropriate device for 20 to 60 minutes. The traction bath, which is well known not only in Hungary but all over the world, continues to produce significant results. Neuritis, myositis, disturbed venous circulation in the lower extremities as well as lumbago and cervical complaints are also successfully treated.

The Thermal Hotel Heviz was built near the lake at Heviz. The treatments are made inside the hotel, in the therapeutical sections, where the most up-to-date balneo-, electro and mechanotherapies are used on the basis of the specialist’s diagnostic examination.
